The YC² Mission

Youth Chamber Connection (YC²) is a chamber music program for young musicians in the Pittsburgh and tri-state area. YC² is a shared program of Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras (TRYPO) and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO), and is open to all interested students, regardless of music program affiliation.

Our Story

YC² began as a summer chamber music experience in Chautauqua, NY, where young Pittsburgh musicians gathered to grow their craft thanks to the care and support of Pittsburgh’s own Laurie and Jim Cunningham! Recognizing the deep musical and personal value of these sessions year after year, TRYPO and PYSO joined forces to bring the program home—launching YC² in 2015. Since then, we’ve empowered hundreds of young musicians to excel both on and off the stage.

What We Do

What Makes Us Unique

There’s a spot for everyone – At YC², we believe there is a place for everyone in chamber music, that's why we don’t require formal auditions. Instead, students submit a brief placement video demonstrating their current playing level. This allows our faculty to thoughtfully place each student into a small ensemble that fits their ability and fosters both challenge and collaboration. It’s a welcoming and inclusive way to meet students where they are, musically and personally.

Education and outreach – YC² goes beyond performance to nurture well-rounded musicians and thoughtful citizens. Our program emphasizes:

  • Musicianship skills: ensemble communication, interpretation, and leadership

  • Teamwork: responsibility to the group, listening, and mutual support

  • Public service: sharing music with underserved communities and learning how art can make an impact. Through workshops, guided rehearsals, and community events, students experience chamber music as both an artistic and human endeavor.

Collaborative roots – YC² is the product of a meaningful partnership between two of Pittsburgh’s premier youth music organizations: Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras (TRYPO) and the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO). Formed in 2015, this collaboration brought together decades of educational excellence to build a new model for chamber music training. The program’s strength lies in this shared vision—and in the dedicated community of coaches, staff, and families who make it thrive.
